Genesis 6 – Who are the Sons of God?

Some suppose these were angels that took “daughters of men” which conceived and gave birth to Nephilims. Genesis 6, in context, is talking about the human race of men and women, to insert that angels participated in “multiplying and filling the earth” is absurd, for God gave this command to man and woman. Also, Jesus stated to the Sadducees that if a woman ended up marrying a total of seven brother (as each one died) who’s wife would she be in heaven and Jesus told them none for in heaven there is no marriage or giving into marriage and likened it unto the angels.

The ‘Sons of God’ were the offspring of Seth, and were godly men. The ‘daughters of men’ represented the offspring of Cain. So, what we have is a mingling of the professed people of God with those who were not of God…the righteous mingling with wicked.  As a result of this mingling of righteous and wicked, the heart becomes continuously evil and the flood comes and there is a worldwide destruction.

White wrote, “For some time the two classes remained separate. The race of Cain, spreading from their first settlement, dispersed over the plains and valleys where the children of Seth had dwelt. The latter, in order to escape their contaminating influence, withdrew to the mountains and there maintained the worship of God in its purity. But in the lapse of time they ventured to mingle with the inhabitants of the valleys. ‘The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair.’ The children of Seth displeased the Lord by intermarrying with the. Many of the worshipers of God were beguiled into sin by the allurements constantly before them, and they lost their holy character. Mingling with the depraved, they became like them. The restrictions of the seventh commandment were disregarded, ‘and they took them wives of all which they chose’. The children of Seth went ‘in the way of Cain’. Jude 11. They fixed their minds upon worldly prosperity and enjoyment and neglected the commandments of the Lord. Sin spread abroad in the earth.” EP 44.1

Matthew 22:30 (KJV)
30 for in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

Furthermore, Genesis 1:24 speaks to God creating “kinds” and this genetic code came from God.

In the genealogy of Jesus, Luke writes in chapter 3:38, ‘…son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God.’ So, Jesus referred to human beings as ‘sons of God.’ Also Matthew tells us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (Matt. 5:9, NASB)

Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. (Luke 20:36, NASB)

Paul also referred to humans as “sons of God”:
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Romans 8:14, NASB)
For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. (Romans 8:19, NASB)
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (Gal. 3:26, NASB)

In Genesis 6:3, God says, “My Spirit will not remain with ‘mankind’ forever, because they were corrupt.” It says “mankind” — not a mix of man and demon. In verse 4 it says the Nephilim were “…powerful men…” Again, not powerful demon-men. And in verse 7, “…the Lord said, ‘I will wipe off the face of the earth: man, whom I created…'” Here we see an explicit reference to who and what God intended to bring judgement to — man. God says nothing about demons or fallen angels here. That which God created, man, would be destroyed — with the exception of righteous Noah and his family.

God alone is the Creator. Demons and angels do not have the power to create, so they could not have re-created, or reproduced with human beings. Different KINDS cannot procreate, only within the KIND…this is how God designed his earthly creatures. And, God only says that He will destroy MAN who he created.

If the demons were reproducing offspring with humans then, why don’t we see any other instance of this in the Bible — and why aren’t they doing it today? The answer, is that it simply isn’t possible. We need to be careful that we don’t try to force the Bible to say what it doesn’t actually say. Instead, we must use proper biblical interpretation that lets the Bible say what it says, adding nothing and taking nothing away.

Job

There are three passages in Job that refer to the ‘sons of God’, that seem to indicate that these were godly angels, since mankind had not received access to God’s presence before the resurrection of Christ, and the fallen angels (Lucifer and his gang) had been expelled from God’s presence.:

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. (Job 1:6, NASB)

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. (Job 2:1, NASB)

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you [a]have understanding,
Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? “On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy? (Job 38:7, NASB)

The Sons of God can refer to angels, for we know that they sang together when this world was created; however. as with all things CONTEXT, CONTEXT, CONTEXT.

Other Scripture

Throughout the rest of the Bible, and particularly in the New Testament, when the term ‘sons of God’ is used it is referring to human beings. See Appendix C for more detail.

Adam is also called the Son of God. So humans can also be referred to as Sons of God. Sons of God are in tune with His requirements and in harmony with His will. Over the ages this term has been applied to the children of God such as the children of Israel. On the other hand, the children of men (sons and daughters) were humanist and rejected God.

Angels do not pro-create the Bible is clear.

So when the Sons of God (holy men of God) saw that the daughters of men (rejectors of God) were beautiful and inter-married with them (that means that those who were in the faith married those that were not in the faith) which resulted in apostasy.

The Bible says we should not be unequally yoked, meaning believers and non-believers should not marry. The Sons of God were the off-spring from Adam that remained faithful. The children of men were the off-spring of Cain and are those that did not remain faithful. Eventually, they intermingled. Especially, of course, the daughters of Cain made sure they look especially delightful. This is one of the tactics used by Satan to destroy.

Nephilim

The word “giant” is nephilim. Nephilim is sometimes translated as “giants”, and sometimes it is translated as apostate. There is no doubt that these people were gigantic, Adam himself was in excess of 9.5 feet as well as every animal was larger; which we can see in the fossil record. The Bible actually give some dimensions of the Canaanite kings bed sizes. These giants were also apostate, and these apostates are the ones that led to the corruption of the entire race. Again, a tactic used by Satan.

The Book of Enoch was not a part of the canon because it, as well as all of the other apocryphal books, appears 300-400 years after the canon closed (in the case of both the OT and NT). And there are portions of Enoch that do not harmonize with the canon. The measure is, if it does not speak to the law and to the testimony into the Word then there is no light in them. The apocryphal books failed the biblical test. Mingling truth and error is not conducive to good doctrine (just remember the Garden of Eden). So how do you pick out what is and is not truth? Follow the biblical test, if the writing does not harmonize 100% – it is rejected.
