Healed By His Wounds

Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24, are two passages describing the physical and emotional punishment Christ took upon Himself for the sake of humanity—of those who chose to believe in Him (John 3:16-17). However, the passage in Isaiah is one of the most renowned Old Testament passages because it prophesied about Jesus 700 years before He arrived in a manger.

Isaiah provides a clearer explanation of Christ’s atoning work for sinners. It is rich in detail of Christ’s suffering and crucifixion of His saving work for each of us. In an effort to understand the truth of these passages, let’s take a look at both Isaiah 53:5 and 1st Peter 2:24 in context.

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities:
The chastening of our peace was upon Him;
And with His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
That we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:
By whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

The first time we come across this passage is when Isaiah describes what was going to happen to Jesus. He describes the suffering of the Messiah and then writes the reasons for His suffering: He was wounded for our transgressions (rebellion) and bruised for our iniquities (depravity).

The prophet Isaiah was pointing out that:

  • Our sins required an atonement, for ALL are guilty before God (Romans 3:23). The sacrificing of the animals pointed to the sacrifice of the Messiah (Lev. 17:11). The sin offering was a poignant picture of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of the world (1 Peter 1:19). Jesus’ blood made atonement for the sin of any person who confesses his guilt to God and asks for that atonement, made possible through Jesus, to be applied to him (John 3:16-17, Eph. 1:7, Hebrews 9:22). Full details of the sin offering and the requirements associated with it are enumerated in Leviticus 4 and Numbers 15.
  • Our sins required forgiveness. The term forgiveness comes from the Greek word aphiemi, which means “to let go, to give up, to keep no longer.” When Jesus forgives us, our sins, trespasses, iniquities, and transgressions are erased, wiped off the record. Forgiveness of sin is analogous to financial debt being erased. When God forgives us of our sins, we are free. Our sins are wiped out. God will never hold them against us (Psalm 103:12, Micah 7:19, Jeremiah 31:34, Hebrews 8:12, 1 John 1:9). We are truly washed.
  • The term salvation comes from the Greek word sozo, which means “to be delivered, rescued.” Salvation is deliverance from the penalty of sin, that is, eternal death/separation from God which is called the ‘second death’ (Romans 6:23; Matthew 25:46, Revelation 2:11, 20:6,14-15, 21:8). Salvation and forgiveness are closely related. There is no salvation without forgiveness. Salvation is God’s delivering us from the consequences of sin. Forgiveness is God’s erasing our sin debt.  The ONLY ONE who can do this is Jesus (Acts 4:12, Romans 8:1), and the only way to be reconciled to the Father is through Jesus and Jesus alone (John 14:6).

Isaiah made it clear that that the Messiah to come would be blameless, perfect, pure, and free from sin in every way; but would take upon Himself the punishment that is ours. Isaiah also makes it clear that His suffering would be the cure and restoration for mankind.

Peter also writes about the work of Jesus on the cross. He explains that Christ traded our sins for His life. He bore the punishment for our sins.

Francois du Plessis presents in a unique way how His stripes heal us from the guilt of our sins. All of humanity needs healing, and it is only Jesus that can make us whole (2 Cor. 5:21). Francois highlights this as he showcases the life of Christ.
