Origins

Genesis is God’s account of how the universe was created. It was a collaboration between God the Father, Jesus the Son*, and the Holy Spirit. It plainly and simply tells us that God spoke our universe into existence and filled the earth in six literal days, completed His work with a seventh day of rest which He set apart, made it holy, and blessed it as a gift for the human race. God’s Creation work took place about 6,000 years ago.

God’s love is evident not only in the beauty of the star and planet filled heaven, our earthly home, and the variety of the animal and plant life; but especially in the creation of the human race with His very hands. The making of man and woman was the crowing work of His Creation. He spoke everything else into existence, but He form man and woman with loving hands placing His very image upon them and lovingly breath into them the breath of life. Thus, began the human race; created to be ‘image bearers’, meaning we were made to love, for God is love.

Genesis not only documents our origins, but also states who we are (image bearers), where we came from (the hand of God), and our purpose (love God and others, take care of our home and the animals, to fill the earth).

God took special care to establish a day, the seventh day, as a day to rest from our labors so we can rest in our Lord. This is the day especially set aside as a memorial of the work He performed in the previous six literal days. In it, mankind rests from his/her labor but it also marks a special time to take delight in our Creator and nature. It is time to do good by keeping an eye out for the needs of our neighbor. And, the Sabbath is a sign between us and our Creator that we acknowledge Him as our LORD who sanctifies us.

*John1:1-3 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

The Word, mentioned by John, is Jesus Himself. John identifies Jesus here as a primary participant in creation.

The second verse of the entire Bible says the spirit of God hovered above the waters (Genesis 1:2). So, it was the Father, the Son – Jesus, and the Holy Spirit that created the universe together. There was a plan—a relationship, intent, and inclusion.

The morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy as they watched the Almighty God lay the foundations of the Earth, dressed it in the garb of beauty, and filled it with things useful to mankind. God created all the wonders of the land and of the sea in six days and the great work of creation was completed.

There are those that say that time is relative. If we look at the scientific thinking in terms of origin of the universe and the Big Bang, it is claimed that the universe originally contracted to the point of the primordial egg, which as the astrophysicist and quantum physicist say, consisted of nothing which exploded and created everything.

The Bible says God created out of nothing, he spoke and it stood fast. there is no difference between science and scripture on this level, both start from nothing and end up with everything…the only difference is the way in which it is perceived; either over millions and millions of years or in an instant.
